We are thrilled to announce that we are taking a significant leap towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
As part of our commitment to supporting the Cook Government's target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, we have purchased a cutting-edge vanadium redox flow battery for a long-duration energy storage pilot in Kununurra.
Horizon Power is proud to embrace the potential of vanadium redox flow battery technology. The 78-kilowatt/220kWh battery represents a milestone in our quest to test and harness the capabilities of providing long periods of 100% renewable energy for the entire region of Western Australia.
In collaboration with VSUN Energy, a subsidiary of Australian Vanadium Limited, we have signed an agreement for the purchase, installation, and commissioning of this revolutionary battery system. Vanadium batteries boast exceptional characteristics, including temperature resilience in harsh environments, long-duration capacity, and stable energy storage.
The potential applications of this technology are truly game-changing. The vanadium battery can store high volumes of excess energy and provide crucial backup power during peak demand periods or when the power supply is interrupted. By doing so, it minimizes the need for costly fossil fuel generation and grid infrastructure upgrades.
Moreover, this breakthrough technology has the potential to provide a sustainable, long-term solution for microgrids and off-grid power systems, paving the way for a greener and more resilient energy landscape.
Our pilot project will be instrumental in gaining valuable insights into effectively integrating this technology into Horizon Power's extensive network. We look forward to collaborating with other industry leaders, innovators, and stakeholders as we embark on this exciting journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for regional Western Australia.
The vanadium battery is scheduled to arrive in Perth in early 2024. After thorough testing, it will be transported to Kununurra to commence the pilot program. We are confident that this endeavour will yield promising results, propelling us closer to our goal of achieving a sustainable energy ecosystem.
We extend our gratitude to Energy Minister Bill Johnston for his support and recognition of our commitment to embracing cutting-edge clean energy technologies. Horizon Power is eager to demonstrate the potential of long-duration, 100% renewable energy, and we envision a future where such solutions power our vast 2.3 million square-kilometre network.
Stay tuned for updates on this groundbreaking pilot project, and join us in envisioning a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable energy future for Western Australia!
