Aptech Africa recently designed, supplied, installed and commissioned a hybrid solar system for ministry of local government and law enforcement in Malakal, South Sudan in a project funded by the UNDP.

The system consists of carport mounted 24.5kWp of Soliel Power solar panels and 51.3kWh of lithium-ion battery storage system. The system is hybrid; integrated with a 50KW diesel generator. The system used an integrated system of batteries, inverters and smart power management unit from ALPHA ESS. This system has an inbuilt remote monitoring system to show the real time and daily yield of the solar system from the panels to the inverter and batteries also the functionality of the generator if in use, as well as showing the real time data statistics, errors and alerts if any.

The ministry is located in Malakal along the White Nile, in upper Nile state, South Sudan, close to the international borders with the Republic of Sudan and it has been having an urgency and need for it to have a constant supply of power so as to facilitate their activities of law enforcement in the region without power shortage interruptions.

The system is set to benefit over 200 employees of the Ministry of Local Government and Law Enforcement in Malakal. Aptech Africa worked hard to deliver this project within the lead time even though there were delays due to insecurity from disputes within the region that blocked access to the delivery port for some time.

We are happy to have partnered with UNDP and to provide reliable power to the ministry in Malakal. Aptech ensured that the necessary individuals were trained about how the system functions, how to monitor its functionality and how to read errors if any to ensure that it’s functioning as expected and that any abrupt issues can be sited/noted and fixed immediately.

With this installation a more reliable power will be provided to the ministry, cheaper power than sole dependance on diesel which will result in cost savings over time.

The system is also a contribution to sustainable development an ultimate goal of the UNDP, through climate change mitigation achieved by use of clean energy from the sun rather than diesel generators that would otherwise increase the greenhouse gases.
