International law firm CMS is pleased to announce the promotion of David Rutherford to the partnership.

With over 12 years of experience working in the oil & gas, energy transition and maritime sectors, David represents an array of key players in the industry including oil majors, state energy companies, independent contractors and vessel owners. His practice has particular emphasis on energy project development, procurement/supply chain and bespoke funding arrangements.

David’s promotion builds on the recent string of partner additions to the Firm’s Energy and Infrastructure practice, including four new partners in May. Matthew Honeyben joined CMS in London from Eversheds, while Matthew Brown (London), Davinia Cowden (Glasgow) and Charles Dolphin (Muscat) were promoted to the partnership.

Munir Hassan, Global Head of Energy at CMS, comments: “David is a standout oil & gas and energy transition practitioner with deep industry knowledge and a leading reputation across the sector. He has shown himself to be an incredibly pragmatic and commercially astute lawyer who develops innovative solutions for clients navigating complex, multi-faceted major projects. His promotion to the partnership is not only well deserved, but also adds further senior weight to our large bench of energy lawyers.”

David Rutherford adds: “As a longstanding member of the Energy & Infrastructure team, I’m delighted to be stepping into my new role as Partner. I trust my appointment to the partnership will support the growth of the practice and enable us to better support our client’s ambitions in oil & gas and in the development of new, cleaner energy systems to meet energy transition goals.”

With more than 800 energy lawyers, including over 200 partners, the CMS Energy practice is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The practice works globally and has been a leading adviser to the power and oil & gas sectors for over 40 years. With a global focus and dedicated teams advising on each of the new technologies and areas emerging from the Energy Transition, CMS is uniquely placed to ensure clients receive knowledgeable advice best suited to their commercial needs.
