JOGMEC held a “geothermal workshop” jointly with the International Energy Agency - Geothermal Technology Collaboration Program (hereinafter “IEA Geothermal”) at the PACIFICO Yokohama convention complex, Kanagawa Prefecture, on October 6, 2023, gathering geothermal experts from home and abroad. The workshop, timed with an Executive Committee meeting of IEA Geothermal held from October 3 to 5, is designed to promote the use of geothermal energy in and outside Japan through international technology exchanges on geothermal use. JOGMEC has been representing Japan at IEA Geothermal since 2013.
At the workshop, the geothermal specialists from Japan and foreign countries, especially from Europe, made nine presentations along with a theme, “Maximizing Heat and Electricity, Minimizing Environmental Impact,” regarding the latest trends of technology for surface geothermal equipment. The presentations included the introduction of technological development and case studies at actual plants for maximizing power generation and heat supply while minimizing the environmental impact.
The workshop saw a total of 58 participants from various industries and business lines (43 attendees from within Japan and 15 from overseas), including energy development-related companies and research institutes. After each presentation, there were lively question and answer sessions between the speakers and participants. Reference materials are posted at IEA Geothermal website (see the note below for its URL).
The geothermal workshop was followed by a networking event between the speakers and participants aimed at exchanging knowledge and building relationships, bringing the event to a successful conclusion.
JOGMEC will continue to provide useful information, through seminars, workshops, etc., for the development of geothermal resources by domestic companies and other parties concerned.
