The engineering and technology group Sener and Fildravo, a leading architecture engineering consulting company in the country, signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly offer engineering services for offshore wind projects in the Philippines, leveraging Sener’s global experience in the industry and Fildravo’s local expertise, promoting sustainable projects that impact positively in the community.
Sener, a Spanish global engineering and technology group, and Fildravo, one of the leading architecture engineering consulting companies in the Philippines, have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on offshore wind projects in the Philippines. The partnership leverages Sener’s expertise in offshore wind engineering and Fildravo’s in-depth knowledge of local dynamics and stakeholder engagement, environmental impact assessment, and permitting to help government and industry leaders and communities tap the vast country’s offshore wind potential.
After successfully working together on the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), the partners are now directing their shared purpose on sustainability towards the Philippines’ Offshore Wind resources and increasing renewable energy supply. The government is targeting to restore the overall share of renewable energy in the Philippines’ electricity mix from 21% in 2021 to 35% by 2030, which is what the share was in 2008.
According to the World Bank’s 2022 Philippines Offshore Wind Roadmap, the Philippines has a technical potential offshore wind resource of 178 GW. As of April 2023, DOE has awarded 63 offshore wind contracts with a total potential capacity of 49.92 GW. This increased scale requires data analysis, meaningful stakeholder engagement and careful planning in collaboration with government to manage the risks, as well as strategic investments in aligning port capabilities with offshore wind requirements.
Sener has undertaken screening and feasibility studies in countries like Spain, Portugal, and Brazil. Sener has performed engineering and R&D services for offshore wind farms including but not limited to Parc Tramuntana (Spain, 500 MW), Parque Tarahal (Spain, 225 MW), and other projects in Australia and Colombia, and various engineering studies such as port analysis in representative countries like the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Italy. Sener has also provided construction supervision in projects such as Kincardine Offshore Floating Wind Farm (UK) and Baltic Eagle Offshore Wind Farm (Germany). On the other hand, Fildravo has been involved in the masterplan development for the Cagayan Special Economic Zone (54,000 has) as well as other architecture and engineering services for industrial plants and ports.
