South African mining company Seriti Resources has started construction on a 155 MW wind power generation facility in Mpumalanga Province. The facility is part of a larger 900 MW project and South Africa’s largest wind energy initiative being developed by the company’s renewables arm, Seriti Green Energy.

In February 2023, Seriti Resources signed a Power Purchase Agreement paving the way to supply its mining operations with capacity generated from the 155 MW facility.

The company is using R4 billion in financing provided by Standard Bank and RMB to develop the project, having already secured environmental authorization from South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment.

“This agreement is a meaningful step that further cements the significance of the inclusion of renewable energy through Seriti Green into the Group’s existing portfolio of high-quality coal assets to lower its carbon footprint and ensure long-term sustainability as a diversified energy producer,” said Mike Teke, CEO of Seriti.

Power supply from the wind farm is anticipated by 2025.
