Floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) refers to water-based liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations employing technologies designed to enable the development of offshore natural gas resources. While no FLNG facilities currently exist, a facility is in development by Royal Dutch Shell, and is due to be completed by around 2017. The Floating LNG (FLNG) technology features the integration of proven technologies such as FPSO, baseload onshore LNG plants and LNG carriers. It include an LNG loading plant, an LNG storage tank and a loading facility similar to that available on a conventional FPSO. The floating LNG concept reduces the environmental impact of constructing an onshore facility in terms of the land, harbour and infrastructure facilities required. In addition, the concept is expected to reduce the costs incurred and the project lead-time.
