SM Energy Company is an independent energy company focused on the exploration, exploitation, development, acquisition, and production of natural gas and crude oil in the United States. The company was founded in 1908, incorporated in 1915, and became a public company through an initial public offering in 1992. SM Energy trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SM.
SM Energy operates in five core areas managed by five regional offices: the Mid-Continent, Rocky Mountains, ArkLaTex, Permian Basin, and Gulf Coast regions. Mid-Continent manages assets in the Granite Wash in the Anadarko Basin, the Haynesville and Bossier shales in the East Texas & North Louisiana Basin, and the Woodford shale in the Arkoma Basin. In Permian Basin with its acquisition of Wolfberry tight oil assets in late 2006. SM Energy's activities in Rockies are primarily focused on the oil-producing formations of the North Dakota portion of the Basin, namely the Bakken and Three Forks formations.
